I've lately used an FA135/2.8 and the photos were great. Overall I am
satisfied with the istD and there isn't much else to use except 35mm lens.
I bought a FA28 as a normal and have a FA50/1.4, 77. I was using mostly
primes with the PZ1p before I got the istD. I guess this is debatable but
if the 35 is a good lens, taking the aps sized center of a good 35 lens
should be the best part. I only see size and weight of smaller digital lens
to be the advantage but the DA 16-45 seems as big or bigger than the
FA20-35. (of course it covers more focal length). A good utility lens for
compactness (but not wide) is the F35-70 and they are really cheap. I would
like a wide prime like 14 or 16 but I have not heard of a good third party
brand yet in this range.

You can see my madness, 16 prime, 20-35, 35-70. The two zooms have worked
out well.
