The closest thing to that I can think of was a photographic flea market sort
of event they had not too long ago- pity I had something else on or I
probably would have quite enjoyed myself there; love a good bargain..
unfortunately I haven't heard of anything similar since. So how would one go
about keeping up to date with such events?

Linhof luck? Your deal with the Mamiya gear sounds pretty lucky to me! But
then again I've no clue what a Super Technika outfit is worth..

Btw, out of curiosity, would anyone happen to know the going rate for a F50
1.4 or a FA28 2.8? I know I've scored better than a bargain, but I don't
know how much exactly.
