Photogenic Photomaster power packs have an optical slave sensor on them that is sensitive enough to trip with an IR flash, or with the RTF flash on the camera. http://www.photogenicpro.com/products/Systems/pm/photomaster.htm The obvious advantages are that the photographer is no longer tripping over a PC cable, and doesn't have to worry about the vagaries of that connection. Broken PC cords are a constant problem in studio. The downside is that the power pack has to be set up beside the subject, just off the background, which makes it a bit less convenient for changing power settings (although still easier than with monolights, which I detest), and that the balance of the camera can be thrown off by the flash on top of it.
