Generally, but not always. The LX calls for a circular polarizer. It is
possible that some other brand manual focus cameras also do, I do not
know.

Can be either. In the case of auto-focus cameras, it is the auto-focus
system that calls for a circular polarizer. In the case of the LX, it is
the metering system.
