Who says DVD(r) is any better than CD(r) for archival
storage?

So why is this? Do you just not like the thought of having to spend more

I'll bet my digital archives out last my film archives long term however
since 
I treat each media type with equal respect I guess I'll be fine in the
next 10 
years, I already have reliable 10 year old CD archives and I've just 
successfully migrated it all to DVD.
