Do the point and shoot cameras not have a problem with dust? or are they a totally sealed unit?

They seem to be mainly sealed units - but i don;t know how sealed that actually makes them (gaps in plastic bodies etc). They definately don't expose the sensor to the air in quite the same extreme way that a DSLR does.
