DOF is the killer in these types of shots. I was reading an article just today on photo.net by a photographer Mark Plonsky who seems to be a master of this type of macro shot, see: http://www.photo.net/phtodb/presentation?presentation_id=188714 Interestingly he seems also to be making use of the method that I have been using lately to add DOF by combining images at varying planes of focus. I've found it can really produce great results some times, I would really like to see a focus bracket option implemented some time as it would make this type of technique much more viable.
