Peter,
I think the point about a forum is that It would allow people to have more control over the threads they read - at present all threads reach your inbox whether you like them or not. Obviously you can turn thread view on in your email client and filter that way, but the advantage of a forum is that you don't have to DL anything at all (good for folks on dialups). Just clic the thread tiitles that interest you and enjoy. On other advatage is that you would be able to name an administrator who could lock or delete posts/topics he/she didnt like.

In my past experience, anything that involves splitting a list is rarely
productive. I can see why it might seem good to move the OT topics
somewhere else, but this won't really work out. You may succeed in some
moving there, but it will also move the on topic expertise there.
The same goes for IRC chat. By all means people can get together anc chat,
but there's no way it'll take all of the off-topic and no on-topic, or no
one would bother. I cherish the experience and advice of the people on this
list much more technically competant and talented than I, and anything that
splits that expertise I see as a bad thing. I don't want to have to read a
mailing list, a forum and an IRC channel to get the same content I am now
:) - I know the intention would not be for this to happen, but its easy to
think "hmm, I want to buy a lens, I'll just check with the guys on IRC about
it". Then this knowledge never gets shared with those not in the channel.
Please note I'm not trying to put down your efforts, or censor you, or
anything :), you are obviously free to start a list, and good luck. But I
would suggest that if you want to, please find a good reason for it.. such
as a 'digital pentax' list, or a 'medium format' one, or a 'landscape' list.
Lets not pretend that starting a forum will somehow free the list of
off-topic discussion and associated flaming.

If you want to join the Pentax Forum it's quite simple, go here: http://www.bluehorizon3d.com/cgi-bin/IB3/ikonboard.cgi
And start chatting it up.
If people actually use it, I will continue to make adjustments and updates
to the look of the board, and to the various categories.
Let the list know if you join, and by all means offer any advice or suggestions for the boards should you have any.
