Henri, if you can't open the hatch, simply remove the whole bottom
housing by the three screws there (if I can remember correctly), and
clean the battery plate offcamera with strong winegar or citric acid I
think. Heating it a little could help too.

When you are at it, there is a MX repair guide at www.robertstech.com
(Mark Robert's site). You can check for corrosion in the wires going
from the battery compartment (there is possibly just one, as the other
pole would be connected trough the chassis), battery acid can corrode
inside wires too. And check the two golden plate contacts at the
bottom of left side of camera (the side with shutter dial), these
close the metering circuit when you press on the shutter release
button. Often, these need just a little adjustment or cleaning to get
a working meter.
