Both interesting shots - I like the first one best. The background really identifies the setting for this image. At first I was going to comment that the face was too dark, but after pulling the image into photoshop it looks fine. It's interesting that with my browser the eyes are totally obscured and there is just darkness under the bill of that hat. Photoshop shows much more shadow detail.
the second image, in context with the first, makes for a nice abstraction. The man himself is there only by suggestion. But, I think if one hadn't seen the first image that effect would be lessened or even non-existent. It could be seen then as just a shot of a quirky carving. But, that's speculation on my part since I saw the first image first and can't unsee it now...
