I did this quickly, but I just masked the bird, did a strong gaussian blur on the background, and feathered it before combining.

I especially like the first shot (I have a Vivitar mirror lens and I don't think it's that sharp). In the first pic, the bokeh seems to radiate away from the bird and I like the artistic effect. I think both of these pictures are good cases to try to "fix" the bokeh using photoshop. If you selected out the focused parts, could you apply one of the filters to remove the patterning in the background?
