Oh, Dave ... layers is so much better.  They're not
destructive to the original image, and you can adjust them
as needed later on.  Generally, I do as much work as
possible in layers, then save the file, layers and all,
before flattening the image and preparing it for the final
stages, such as printing or save for web, etc.  Then, should
i want to come back to that image, and perhaps redo
something - maybe add contrast or change hus/sat, I can just
call up the layered file, go to the appropriate layer, and,
voila ...
