Thanks, Andy. To a large extent the framing of that shot was determined by
a big yellow sign just out of the frame to the right. It sits on the
catwalk and warns people to keep off the pier, or something like
that. (Since the pier always has people on it - I had to wait quite while
to get clear shot of it - it's a rather futile warning.) The only options
for a less tight composition are inclusion of the sign or leaving the
lighthouse and pier close tot he right edge with more empty space to the
left - or moving off to the left and loosing the way the rock fall into the
frame...

taking in just a little more horizon at the background.
