Anytime you introduce a zoom that meets a difficult challenge on two fronts--a challenging range AND a large constant aperture--you guarantee that it will be bought only by pros and the well-heeled. Moreover, such a lens is nearly always hefty and would require huge filters. Nikon made the right choice in designing its 24-135 zoom a variable aperture.
