They let you take photos in the Turbine Hall, at least, and that *is* the most impressive part of the building... :-)
In the case of the free museums and galleries, they wouldn't *really* mind losing the small fraction of visitors who find their photography policy annoying, and they probably make useful money from the extra postcard sales, so it's not really surprising.
