One press of the info button when the rear display is blank will reveal a small 
frame at the top left of the screen, to its left is the AF mode and the dots 
within the frame show the active focus spot/matrix.

Shoot a TIFF image with the cap on using a shutter speed of 1 second or more 
(turn off noise reduction). You can either visually inspect the file or use a 
utility such as http://www.starzen.com/imaging/deadpixeltest.htm
