Here's one way of looking at it:

My digital camera, at this point, has cost about a dollar and a quarter per
exposure. Because of my bad luck with my LX bodies, which cost about a
dollar and a half per exposure, not including cost of film, this is already
a cost saving over film.

However, I get more good pictures with film on a % basis by a huge margin,
so the digital really is a false economy in that way.

There is no way around the fact that DSLR's are expensive.
Some may find them over priced, others may not.
