I've shot a bunch of macros using this technique and a generic (well - Spiratone) bellows set, no contacts, no aperutre linkage, just set the shutter speed on the body, stop down, and shoot. Works great.

This wasn't really interesting for the *ist D before the recent firmware upgrade, which allows you to manually setting the aperture ring in Manual Mode.
