Normally if I read about an LX with focusing problems I would advise a trip
to Pentax for a complete CLA and replacement of the rubber bumper where the
mirror rests (aka "sticky mirror problem"). However, I know that your LX
was recently at Pentax, so I assume that everything is OK with the rubber
bumper behind the mirror. Assuming that you still have warranty, I would
suggest another trip to Pentax.
Otherwise, there are a few possibilities:
- if the image is not in focus as seen in the viewfinder, and still not in
focus on film, then there is a problem with the lens mount or with the film
position.
- otherwise, the problem lies along the optical path when the mirror is down
Like you noted, this might indicate an improper mirror position or an
improperly installed focusing screen. Far less likely would be an
improperly mounted viewfinder.
I am sure that these are all things that you knew, sobut here are a couple
that you might not have thought of:
- lock the mirror up, check for dirt behind the mirror or on the rubber
bumper where the mirror sits.
- remove the viewfinder and check for dirt between the screen and the glass
element above the screen. (this may be impossible, I've never tried it).
Good luck with figuring out the problem,
Boz
