I have been using a much less expensive means for this. It
is a very simple matter to drill a hole up through the forestock
of a discarded *real* riflestock. A selection of medium to large
washers and a standard 1/4in threaded bolt of an appropriate
length allows firmly mounting a long telephoto via the lens'
tripod mount. 2nd hand stores can be an inexpensive source of
        the gunstock.

I generally mount my old 300mm f4 this way as the smcp 400mm f5.6
has a considerably stiffer focus ring. I often pop a m42->K adapter
into a Tokina 2x'er for a 600mm f8 as well. the end result is a very
stable & substantial shoulder support and handles as well as a nice
shotgun amongst the quackerz - less than US$5 :^)
