It looks like Pentax may be trying to emulate the look of film with the ist D. Both Brian and I have noted that the ist D prints have a smoother tonality to them than the Canon prints. Less of the digital "look" for lack of a better term from the Pentax than from the Canon. This approach may not translate as well to the computer screen, but it does seem to have an advantage on paper.
