First house in the world powered by elecricity? Cragside, owned by the
Newcastle shipping and armaments magnate Armstrong. First turbine
powered ship? Turbinia, manufactured on Tyneside. Inventor of the
light bulb? Joseph Swann of Sunderland. Matches? John Walker of same.
First passenger steam railway? Stockton on Tees. Enough, already? 8-)

OK, I know that the railway is about 40 miles away. But the guy who
built the locomotive was born at Wylam and built it in a shed behind the
present Newcastle railway station.
