I would say, that the 28-105PZ was a mid range products when it was released. There was no 28-105 consumer lens (iirc). Today 28-105s are much cheaper to produce (and have no PZ) so that we have the three classses you've mentioned. In some years the 24-xxx will be much cheaper and they will become consumer class.
