I have had 2 samples of these lens, which is the only zoom lens I have at the moment, they couldn't be both bad I suppose, but I always find them lacking the "snap" of my prime lenses.
I have a 28-105 f4 - 5.6 as well. I used it last spring as my main lens during a vacation, I also used it to shoot a friend's wedding. I found the results to be satisfactory but not outstanding. In particular, at the wide end and wide open, there is an astigmatic look in the corners, especially in larger prints.
I think that one of the basic problems with this lens is that it is so slow. Almost all lenses take a significant hit wide open, and this one is no exception. But stopping down a couple of stops to get to the 'sweet spot' when you are starting at f5.6 can be a problem - it is not always feasable to shoot at f11!
Maybe both of my samples were below the norm, and if so I should try a third sample, but any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Sampling is an issue, more so with some lenses than others. I have not heard of a lot of variation with this lens.
I also have a 28-70 f4, and have to say mine is a very sharp lens, corner to corner. It holds it's own against most primes. But that is one lens, in particular, where there seems to be a lot of sample variation.
