The only advantage in using the LCD preview would be for cropping purposes.
Whenever I use a digital I turn off the LCD and use the viewfinder.  I try
to keep power consumption to a minimum.  It is not fun to try to take a
picture and have the battery disagree with you.

DSLRs do not have this option.  Like you say, it is a non-issue.

I do admit to taking a peek after a shot to make sure nothing was too out of
the ordinary and then proceed to take my shots as if it were a film camera.
