Colour depth generally refers to the cumulative number of bits that represent the individual colour components ie 24bit (red, green and blue) colour but the same colour depth could also be described as 3 x 8bit (8bits each of red, green, blue) or 16M+ (2^8 * 2^8 * 2^8) colours.
