Each sensor location has at lest two sensors: one with fine gradations for regular light and another with coarser gradations for low light. So Nikon trades off some focusing precision in low light for faster performance. Cross pattern sensor locations have a total of 4 sensors. So the AF in the F5 and F100 with 5 "sensors" have a total of 16 sensor arrays. It works very well. I rarely need the AF assist light, which is a good thing because it will only come on if the center AF sensor is selected. It is much better than the AF in the N80.
AF tests are conducted under static conditions which often don't reflect real world conditions.

Yeah, it is very good but it has tested no better. What about low light?
All the best!
