I've been in touch (via the rec.photo.equipment.35mm newsgroup) with a rather odd individual who tells me that the last two versions of the 70-210 Series 1 were made by Cosina. As I mentioned, he's a bit weird, but he's a big fan of the early Series 1 lenses and seems pretty knowledgable about them.
