I have a book on photographic composition ('Photo Design') by a chap
called Harald Mante. According to him the viewing distance from the eyes
should be about twice the length of the diagonal of the picture. If the
normal reading distance is 12-16 inches (30-40cm) the ideal size for a
photo should be about 4x6 inches (10x15cm), diagonal 7.2" (18cm). This
allows you to take in the entire picture area at a normal reading distance
without having to 'scan'. Of couse, different values would apply for
pictures you hang on the wall.
