The built-in hood alone is worth to choose F* over the FA*. Hoods for
FA* lenses are simply too wide to fit in bags.
Like the F and FA 300/4.5, my XR Rikenon 300/4.5K uses a 67mm filter. It has
a shallow built-in hood, but I found a Spiratone threaded metal hood on Ebay
that's about 3 inches long and no wider than the body.
If you just want something to prevent the front being knocked, the Vivitar
threaded metal hood for the 100-500 is a good, cheap choice, available new
on EBay.
The slightly longer Tiffen Series 8 (1.5 inches?) and Mamiya Sekor (about 2
inches?) threaded metal telephoto hoods are also adequate choices.
Contax's GB-74 threaded metal hood (for 72mm filter rings) was designed for
the Sonnar 210/4.5 and appears to be about 2.5 inches long.
For maximum flare protection, use one of the threaded metal hoods made for a
400mm lens. These are made for 72mm threads and thus will require a slight
step-up ring. Spiratone sold one for its 400/6.3 that measured 3.5 inches
long. I have a couple similar generic (unmarked) hoods, each about 3.25
inches (82mm) wide by 3.25 inches tall. I'd be glad to sell them for anyone
needing such a hood. $25 for the new specimen, $18 for the slightly marred
one, plus shipping.
Photos are available for all hoods mentioned above.
