I tend to agree with this statement from somewhat a different perspective. I
have a few power zoom lenses and if you regard this feature only as a manual
vs. power perspective, it is often dismissed as an unnecessary power eater.
In my opinion, this feature is useful particularly for longer range zooms
like 80-200 and up. I do not quite see the need of this feature for the
27-80/2.8 although you can always disengage it and use it like any ohter
manual zoom.
With a power zoom feature, you can go from the shortest focal length to the
longest one by a touch of ring with very short stroke. It will help you
compose the shot very quickly while holding the camera still. With the
stepless change of zooming speed, you can keep the relative size of the
subject in the frame effortlessly. I guess it all depends on how you use
the zoom. As the power zoom lenses becoming a dying breed, I will hang onto
these tools. As I said, if you do not like this feature, it can always be
turned off.
I am curious to know how John (Francis) feels about his howitzer :-)
Cheers,
Ken
