The SFX has got "servo focus". When you use this feature, the autofocus
system doesn't lock the focus on the subject, and keeps focusing
continuously. You can press the shutter release whenever you want.
By the way, when the SFX appeared in the market, CdI did a series of
comparison tests between the SFX, Nikon F-501 (the camera with the
poorest autofocus system I've ever used, although in other aspects it is
a good manual focus camera), Canon EOS 620 and 650, Minolta 7000 and
9000 and the first Yashica and Olympus autocus bodies. The camera which
got more sharp pictures when focusing on moving targets was the SFX.
