I don't think it's the film or the scanner.  I think it's the
combination of 4,000 dpi resolution and the grain/clump/cloud
characteristics of different films.  I appears that 4,000 dpi is in the
"really not sweet spot" for the types of film I've been using
(primarily Kodak negative films ... Royal Gold 100 & 400 act about as
bad as anything I've scanned so far).
