I tried to buy an S3 before acquiring the Canonet. But they're considerably
thinner on the ground, and quite a bit more expensive when you do find them.
I've heard nothing but good things about them, though.

I've got both, and tend to take the S3 to more "candid" situations that I'd never take the Canonet. You can bring it up to your eye, quickly focus and shoot w/o interrupting a social situation. Also, the Exposure Lock "feature" makes it easy to use the meter in oddly lit situations (if that's your cup of tea).

As you point out, this little guy seems to be gaining in popularity as it's ebay price of late suggests.
