Hi .
I dabbled with some night star shots last year.I found by placing the north star(oh i'm
about 46 
degrees latitude in north america)either in the centre or off to one top left,right
corner,you get some 
nice circular effects at about 50-60 minutes exposure. I used Kodak 400 film(not sure 
if
it was max or 
not) with a 35-80 zoom at 35 and wide open at f 4. I also put a tree in the bottom 
corner
for effect and 
scale.

Good luck.We have not seen the sun in 2 weeks here.This is why i took 2 week vacation 
at
Christmas 
to take pictures,so far not many:(
