Dosk,

I have a ZX-5n and it works fine with manual focus lenses. For that matter,
the autofocus lenses focus fine in manual mode on it, too.

I've used an FA 100/2.8 macro off AF for most of the macro shots I've taken
(AF grinding back and forth at close distance is very irritating and time
devouring). I've got an A 50/1.7 (~$50, mint cond.) that is fine (once
aquainted with the longer throw of the focus ring). The FA 35/2 is almost
always on AF unless I'm using it reversed on the bellows, though. The 35
has such a nice DOF and focuses so quickly, that there isn't much point,
for me, in switching it to MF.

If you don't overpay for used glass in good condition, you can probably
resell it and get your most or all of your dough back. That gives you a low
risk and cheap opportunity to experiment with new focal lengths, a no
brainer IMO.
