Hi all,

I just received a used SMC-A 70-210/4 that I purchased last week on eBay.
Don't think I got any great bargain at $130, but probably as good a price
(or better?) as something in similar condition from KEH, etc. The barrel's
in great shape cosmetically, the glass looks excellent throughout, the
aperture blades appear very crisp, and it appears to have always been stored
and used with a UV filter in place. I was initially disappointed to find
some slop in the zoom mechanism. However, I tightened the little screw
under the rubber sleeve that controls tension of the zoom mechanism, and
things seem to be nice and snug now.

One minor thing I noticed -- which I have not yet attempted to fix -- is
what appears to be a tiny fleck of black material (paint?? metal shaving??)
near the edge of a lens surface located behind the aperture blades. (That
is, this fleck is between the K-mount flange and the aperture blades.) If
the lens is stopped down smaller than about f/5.6 or f/6.7, the fleck is not
visible. I don't think this material will affect image quality, but I KNOW
it's there. I'm just wondering if it would be worth pulling off the flange
and trying to remove this little piece of schmutz. Looks like five little
screws hold the bayonet flange in place, and three other screws mounted
perpendicular to the barrel optic axis hold a black metal cover in place
over the rear lens element. Anyone have advice on whether this would be a
reasonable repair job for someone with patient, steady hands, and a set of
jeweler's screwdrivers? Part of me says, "Loosen the screws...."; the other
part keeps saying, "Thirteen elements, thirteen elements, thirteen
elements...." Any advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
