I'll second that. If I want the lightest rig for portability, I'll try to
use the shortest legs for greatest rigidity. Really can surprise the
neighbors, though. I had a short telescope (er, long-focus telephoto lens)
on my cheapy Velbon tripod one night, taking shots of the crescent Moon. No
leg extension, and *definitely* no center post extension. My neighbor was
taken aback when he saw my apparently lifeless body sprawled out on the icy
sidewalk. "Hab keine Angst! I was just composing my photo!"
