Hello.
I'm done with this topic after this post. What I've fought against in this
thread is the gall exhibited by some who only know the United States from a
distance, or only from what they've heard-or read and in the case of one, a
person whose admitted knowledge of the US comes from his studies in a
European University! What cheek, what hubris, what Euro-arrogance! Some know
us only by what they see in exported half hour and one hour television
comedies or crime shows, shows that bear little resemblance to the real life
in America.
My nuclear Afro-Arab Muslim family gathered last month in New York City
(Brooklyn) for Ramadan. Among the older siblings there was a Computer systems
program director, another hospital (computer) systems engineer, the 60
year-old "baby" sister who clocked nearly $94,000 this year and me, the elder
sibling, a former publisher-teacher. All are married, with an accumulated 118
years of marriage between us, all except our widowed sister married to their
one and only first loves.
There were at least 3 Platinum, 8 Gold and a plethora of other credit cards
among the four of us, something utterly unthinkable for people of color just
50 years ago.
Among our parents and we siblings, including inherited wealth, there has to
be 30 million dollars in real and other property, also unheard of even 25
years ago!
All that from people of color, who, just 70 years ago, when our former slave
grandparents were still alive, would be thought of as sewer sludge, (not that
some don't think that now).
Our "poor" are evident to those who would look, but what they won't see is
the poor, educating themselves and their children, pulling themselves up by
their proverbial bootstraps.
As infamous, (meanwhile extravagantly rich) Black American fight promoter Don
King is fond of saying:
"Only in America!!"
