To answer your questions on film scanners:
1. Film scanners work with both B&W and Colour negatives. The orange is
removed automatically by the scanning software. More expensive film scanners
allow you to pick your film type from a list and the software can then
accurately remove the orange tint from the image. Photoshop works wonders
with photos, and it would reverse the image quite well. But there is no need
to worry about that.
2. Hmm...I couldn't tell you about this one...I have yet to use slides..but
my transparency scanner has a mount for slides. I don't have to take them
out of their cardboard mounts. Of course, sharpness may be lost this
way...but I can't tell you how much..
