I have found these various opinions on digital both enlightening and in some cases informative. So, here is my opinion, to add to the rest.. I have a clsoe friend that owns and runs a top pro lab in this country. I discuss digital from the wet side of the business to the dry side. I am always asking him what he is seeing and hearing...He is constantly at dinner with both Fuji and Kodak top execs...both companies do alot of business with this lab... What I hear and what I believe are just about the same. The cameras are already made that can rival p&S developed at one hour. However, from a completely financial perspective....ie...the masses...the same problem still exists as it has from the beginning of digital...Mainly...output..... Yes, there are inkjets that do a pretty good job ...sometimes..and dye subs as well. but...for the typical consumer....there still exists these problems....how to use properly, what imaging program to manipulate with...how to use it.....how to set monitor, printer to see the same thing...how to use the darn computer, archiving, and on and on....alot of these concerns would not affect many of us on this list but think in terms of the masses who now use a p & s or inexpensive 35mm or even an throw away....this is the target.... Most of the masses are not going to deal with those issues.... When these same people can shoot on digital media....take to a 1 hr the media and get the pics back in the same manner they are accustom, then the film retailers will see a decrease in film sales...and this day is coming for this target group. I know of someone who has invested several hundreds of thousands on digitizing their studio..guess what, there are more steps to the whole process and they still shoot alot of their business with silver halide... Personally, I like the immediate feedback in the studio of using digital as a polaroid.... Larry This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
