A long time ago, like probably 30 years, I had a pair of Stax electrostatics. They were pricy; I don't remember how much, but certainly nowhere near a thousand. Then again, that was 30 years ago. Yes, they did require a special amp. They even had a special connector that plugged into the amp that came with the phones. And these phones were just wonderful, except for those who want major bass. For folk and classical, they were amazing! And they were light and quite comfortable, but of course, they wouldn't have worked on a pc or a portable device, due to the special connections and power requirements. I didn't even know they made electrostatics any more. Mary
