The radio arrived in the mail around 2 hours ago so I've had little time
to explore the radios features and functions in full but I have had
enough time to fully appreciate that this particular Sangean radio is
worth the $95 I paid for it.
The ATS-405X is a very small portable though sound quality is
surprisingly good through its 2 inch speaker, there are other portables
out there - perhaps of slightly bigger size - with better audio quality
but the Sangean is certainly nothing to be ashamed of owning.
The selectable wide/narrow band filter gives that extra shine to Am
Stations, listening to a sporting event with this radio out of your
jacket pocket would be a pleasure.
The AM band is not as sensitive as other AM radios I own but certainly
acceptable enough to do some good pulling in of distant stations so the
ATS-405X could be a good choice for a travel radio.
Disappointments/ Yep there are a few, the radio doesn't cover all the
Short Wave bands, starting at 2.3MHZ and doesn't have Side band.
On the plus side the radio has an easy to use number pad for entering
frequency's for direct tuning, I'm yet to find out how the memory system
works but I do know that the radio has over 200 memory locations for the
storage of frequently listened to stations.
Connections are few, only an AC adapter connection and a headphones
connection, like most Sangean radios these days the ATS-405X can charge
rechargeable batteries though the switch to turn this function on did
take some finding, its a small switch on the bottom of the radio right
next to the lock switch, a sensible place to find such switches as
they're out of the way and can't be knocked or changed easily.
I will be making some test recordings of the ATS-405X in the not to
distant future.
