I'm working with a client remotely via Tandem, helping with learning
more efficient techniques for using Sound Forge. Everything's
current--Windows 7 is patched to current, JAWS is version 15, SF is
version 11, and the Sound Forge scripts by Jim Snowbarger have been
installed and trained. Today, during an editing session, all
audio--Windows sounds, JAWS, Sound Forge output--stopped after a
couple repeated pressings of the numpad-6 key to move through a file
and hear the progress of the movement. However, the Tandem connection
was still open and I could control the computer from my end, so I knew
the system hadn't crashed. I exited Sound Forge, but audio did not
return on the remote side. I had to disconnect the Tandem session, and
the client had to manually restart Windows by pressing the Windows
key, pressing right-arrow twice to open the Shutdown split button, and
pressing R to invoke the Restart option. The system restarted
successfully and audio returned to functionality.

Upon successful restart, the behavior just described was duplicated by
the client without me being connected via Tandem, so we know it's not
Tandem's fault.

So, what's up with this? Anybody have any clues? Theories? Educated
guesses? Working crystal balls? ANYTHING?
