What? We not only have to put up with people's personal prejudices about
welfare and politics but their tips on dodging taxes aare also ill-informed?

Kelly, this might be useful information, but I have one concern. I hope Tom
will indulge this off-topic post so I can ensure no one leaves with a mistaken
impression.

I'm not sure you can deduct the price of an entire item as an impairment
work-related expense if the item is partly used for non-work purposes. I assume
you'd need to figure out the percentage of cost, time used, etc. I don't know
this for a fact, but I do encourage anyone intrigued by Kelly's post to look
further before getting entangled with the IRS.

For those in wage employment in the US, about a quarter to a third of the cost
of the device can be reduced through tax deduction. If I can read any
work-related document or book with the device or scan any work related
document, I declare it an impairment related work expense. The filer s income
can be reduced by the amount of the declared item. Impairment related work
expenses don t need to meet a threshold level to claim as a deduction, as
regular employment expenses do. I am in the 30 percent federal tax bracket and
have a 6.25state income tax, meaning about a third of my income is sent to the
federal and state governments to spend. This socialist burden is reduced when
we have work-related purposes for our adaptive technology.
