it was in the device manager properties. somehow something got changed in
there. i set it and all is working fine now.

As a result of your post because I am using XP Home on a laptop, I
installed
V5.70 and it played a file no problems. Previously, I installed on a
desktop and again, no problem playing an existing file.
I have changed no settings.
