If you use a condenser mic that has a battery i it with the h-1 you can
elimiate a lot of that hiss.

There's no doubting that Voice Guidance is a help to some people.
The Zoom H1 is perfectly accessible, doesn't have voice guidance but is a
lot cheaper!
If you know how to operate a casette recorder than you can easily operate
a Zoom H1, just press the "Record" button and recording starts, press it
again and recording stops.
The buttons are easily identifiable, the "Record" button is the 1 and only
large button on the front of the unit, the rest are on the sides.
Having said all that I'm aware that Zoom have released several other
models after the H1, not exactly sure what model numbers they are or how
they compare to the H1.
The only small flaw in the performance of the H1 comes with the use of an
External Microphone, in very quite passages of recording you may hear some
background hiss from the Mic amplifiers of the H1 but again far from a
serious problem, after all! who records passages of silence? No one I know
of <smile>.
