I would say that TV on the computer is a closely related subject. It can be either fairly simple or complex. Once set up, Media Center on a Windows 7 system and a TV tuner connected to an antenna works well to record over-the-air TV, and is simple to use. If you try to do the same task with a cable or satellite provider with Media Center on a computer, it can get quite complex. I Googled DirecTV and Media Center this morning, and a lot of sighted folks were having trouble getting that combination to work together. It's probably the same for cable connections.

A separate list may be better for discussions of TV on the computer, but there needs to be enough interest to get a list going and folks with some level of expertise about the subject.

I would think graphics cards are pretty clearly on topic, although I can
see where you might get so specific and so deep that the discussion
would only be of interest to a few people.

I would also think that accessing your cable companies DVR or streams
from your PC would also be on topic, but I could see where you could
easily get into the merits of one cable company over the other, which
would clearly be off topic.

BTW, I applaud your sensitivity to keeping discussions on topic!

Are you saying Tom, that 5 people left the list specifically because of
the cable TV thread? I'm kind of surprised someone would leave the list
for a thread I didn't even realize was going on. I guess people have
different levels of sensitivity. I also wonder how interested those
people were in the list to begin with if they left because of one thread
which may have strayed off topic.

BTW, here's the information I got when I subscribed to the list as far
as what the list is for. I just offer this for informational purposes. I
don't have any comments on it, other than I think it looks good, and I
like the ban on test messages!

Welcome to the Pc-audio@pc-audio.org mailing list! Welcome to the
pc-audio group. Please take a moment to review this message. You
should save it for later reference, as it contains important
information about this group, such as your password, how to change
your preferences, and a few basic rules of conduct we expect all
members to observe.

Attention! Do NOT send a test message to the list or you will not be
subscribed very long!

Guidelines.

PC-audio is a list for the discussion of any PC audio related topic
such as PC audio software like sound editors, audio players and audio
formats; and hardware like sound cards, CD and DVD devices and so on.

While the subject matter is wide ranging, this is not a forum for the
discussion of non-pc-audio matters. There are many other lists for
political or other discussions.

There are also some PC audio related topics which are specifically
excluded from the allowable topics. The explicitly prohibited topics
include:

* requests for songs or other audio files * promotion of audio streams
except for occasional announcements of special events * advertising
audio products and service Willfully posting an off-topic message is
strictly prohibited. While it may be considered that one or two
messages that are off topic can't hurt, if everyone on a large list
like this took that approach, we would quickly descend into chaos.
Asking for replies to be sent privately makes no difference.

Some examples of off-topic messages include:

* Virus alerts * Jokes and humor * Advertising items for sale * Test
messages * Non-audio software and hardware

Oh no! Sorry, my bad. I didn't mean for people to go off list because of me.
That's why when who ever brought it back up again, I invited them to
continue with me off list. See, because I kind of had a funny feeling that once you got into cable companies, you might be going too deep. Like I said
before, that's why I took my discussion about audio threw HDMI ports off
list with Dain too, because I figured we might go too deep talking about
graffics cards.

Christopher,

You're not missing much. A couple weeks ago there were a few posts to the list about cable companies and cable programming and I mentioned that those messages were not appropriate for the PC Audio list. Now, within the past
week or so there's been several messages about home theater and watching
television on a computer and I've just been letting the thread play out to
see where it goes. I'm not sure where exactly to draw the line. A list
member ask for the e-mail addresses of those who would be interested in
continuing the subject off list. So, I think that is about the extent of
the issue.

If only seven members showed interest, that's a very small percentage of the total list membership, almost five hundred members. Since this thread has
been going on, five list members have left the list.

I think most list members are interested in primarily audio and closely
related subjects.

Tom

I must have missed something, but from looking at the thread below, I
don't understand what's going on here. What's the deal with the email
addresses? Is there a reason they can't be grabbed from the email
headers? For example, here's Hamit's email address: Hamit Campos
<hamitcam...@gmail.com>

Also, is there a reason this discussion is going off list?
Is another list specifically for TV on the PC going to be set up? If
so, why not just create it and have people subscribe to it?

Again, sorry if I'm missing a previous discussion, but I only have the
thread below to go off of.
