Hi Dane,
I guess you have windows 7 on that pc. To avoid what happens to you, go in the system tray and look for the speaker icon. once there find in the group of tabs in which you have playback, recording, the one called comunication tab. You should find, pressing tab once, a group of radio buttons responsible of your volume getting lower. Choose the button meaning do nothing. I use the same operating system, but in italian, so the names could be slightly wrong, sorry for that.
