I think someone was looking for USB powered speakers here a little while
ago for their Notebook etc, I'm looking for the same thing myself given
that I'll have a Netbook come Monday.
I've been doing some research and perhaps whoever it was should look at
the Logitech S20 speakers, they're around $95.00 Australian.
Now I've no idea what these sound like though I'm told they sound very good.
They actually contain a sound card as distinct from Digital USB speakers
which are power assisted.
